🚛 NZ Heavy Vehicle Licence Tests

Preparing for your NZ heavy vehicle licence? Whether you’re training for a truck, bus, or specialist vehicle licence, the Road Code rules for heavy vehicles are different from cars and motorcycles. Many learners fail because they don’t revise the weight limits, load rules, and special driving conditions that apply to trucks and buses.

Our free practice tests are designed to mirror the actual NZTA theory test for heavy vehicles. Each test covers the essential topics you need to know:

What’s Included in the Heavy Vehicle Tests

  • Vehicle weight and load limits – Tare, GVM, GCW
  • Licensing requirements – Class 2, 3, 4, 5 rules
  • Road User Charges (RUC) – when and how they apply
  • Signs and markings – heavy vehicle-specific road signs
  • Parking and restrictions – where heavy vehicles can stop or not stop
  • Safety requirements – dangerous goods, fatigue management, braking distance
  • Right of way rules – especially at intersections and while towing trailers

Why Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Matters?

Driving a truck, bus, or large vehicle is very different from driving a car. Heavy vehicles:

  • Take longer to stop due to their weight.
  • Require special awareness of blind spots.
  • Have different speed and parking rules.
  • Often involve additional endorsements (e.g., Dangerous Goods, Passenger).

This is why NZTA has a separate Road Code section for heavy vehicles, and why it’s tested in the licence theory exam.

Common Mistakes in the NZ Heavy Vehicle Licence Test

  • Confusing Give Way vs Stop rules for heavy trailers.
  • Forgetting where RUC licences must be displayed.
  • Misunderstanding maximum speed limits (90 km/h for most heavy vehicles).
  • Not knowing licence renewal requirements for dangerous goods.
  • Incorrectly calculating following distance for heavy trucks vs cars.

Endorsements You May Need

Apart from your licence class, you may also need special endorsements:

  • D Endorsement (Dangerous Goods): For carrying fuel, chemicals, or hazardous materials.
  • P Endorsement (Passenger): For driving buses or shuttles.
  • W, R, T Endorsements: For special vehicles (wheels, rollers, tracks).

These require additional training and renewal every 5 years.

FAQ Section

Most heavy motor vehicles (over 3,500 kg) have a maximum speed limit of 90 km/h on the open road, unless a lower limit is posted

If the vehicle has a windscreen, the RUC licence must be displayed inside on the passenger’s side. For trailers, it must be on the front left side.

A Dangerous Goods endorsement must be renewed every 5 years to remain valid.

A rigid vehicle with a gross laden weight of 12,000 kg requires at least a Class 2 licence.

The certificate must show the Tare weight, Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM), and Gross Combination Weight (GCW) (if towing).
